In fact, the ball spent far too long up in the air, and the whistle sounded far too often, for this to be the case. There was no shortage of effort from all of the players on view but quality was at a premium throughout.

City looked to have sewn the game up in the first six minutes – first Corey Forbes slotted home from Lawrence El-Kassir’s pass, then Forbes set up Rhys Veal for the second. However, City relaxed and Hanwell pulled a goal back in the 12th minute after a good passing move, and were on level terms just after the half-hour from a free-kick.

City restored their lead within a minute as Forbes ran on to a long clearance to finish coolly, but two minutes later Hanwell equalised again from a corner.

City were on top for much of the second half but could not translate their pressure into a goal until Forbes completed his hat-trick with an excellent free-kick from the edge of the penalty area in the 71st minute. Hanwell were content to play long balls and shoot from long range and it looked like City would hold on, until a right-wing cross found a Hanwell substitute unmarked in the 84th minute.

Forbes hit the bar twice in extra time and Kyle Harris seemed to be denied a clear penalty, but there was no addition to the score.

Alex Williams saved two of the first five penalties (as well as managing to score one later on), but City also missed two of theirs. The two teams continued to match each other goal for goal and miss for miss until Hanwell won it on the 9th penalty.

Team: Alex Williams (capt) – James Harris, Simon Reeves, Mitchell Meredith, Craig Duncan – Kyle Harris, Lawrence El-Kassir (sub Richard Higgs 50 min), Luke Carnell, Kieran Collins (sub Alex Eadle 85 min) – Rhys Veal, Corey Forbes

Thame Utd

Allied Counties Subsidiary Cup 2nd Round Monday 7 April 2008
THAME UTD YOUTH (1) 1
OXFORD CITY YOUTH (1) 3 (Craig Duncan 21, Tom Holmes 49, 72)

City progressed in the Subsidiary Cup after running out comfortable winners over Thame United.

The first half was a largely scrappy affair with few clear-cut chances created. The nearest either side came to scoring in the early stages was when Kyle Harris, who was full of energy throughout, charged down a clearance only to see the ball loop over the bar.

City took the lead halfway through the first period when Craig Duncan’s cross-cum-shot from wide left 25 yards out deceived the keeper and sailed into the top corner.

Thame equalised ten minutes later when a right-wing cross was touched in from close range. City’s stand-in front pairing of Tom Holmes and Rhys Veal both saw shots saved towards the end of the half but neither side really created enough to deserve a half-time lead.

The second 45 minutes was a different story. Holmes could have put City ahead before he did make the breakthrough, racing on to a Veal through ball and forcing home the rebound from a tight angle after the keeper had saved well.

Holmes capped an excellent display with his second and City’s third in the 72nd minute, knocking in another rebound after the keeper had failed to gather a Luke Carnell header cleanly.

This was just reward for City who had dominated the midfield in the second half, with Carnell prominent as always, and Kyle Harris and Joe Bull looking dangerous in wide positions. Simon Reeves and Mitchell Meredith were as solid as ever at the back and Thame’s only real chance of the second period came in injury time, when Alex Williams tipped a free-kick over the bar.

The was a good team performance by a hard-working City side, particularly in the second half. They will need to repeat it when they visit title contenders Edgware in the league on Wednesday.

Team: Alex Williams – James Harris, Simon Reeves, Mitchell Meredith, Craig Duncan – Kyle Harris, Luke Carnell, Lawrence El – Kassir (sub Kieran Collins ht), Joe Bull – Tom Holmes, Rhys Veal.

ReadingTown

Allied Counties League Premier Division Tuesday 4th March 2008

Reading Town (1)2
Oxford City (2)3 (Denton 7, Holmes 11, Forbes 47)

City picked up an excellent three points away to Reading Town.

Town had won at City in January but, like City, found themselves at the wrong end of a table which is so tight (5 points between second top and second bottom) that one postponed game is enough to see a side tumble into the relegation zone.

City, as they have often done this season, started at a high tempo and, after an early scare when Town hit the outside of he post, went two goals up early on. First Rhys Denton smashed in a rebound from the edge of the penalty area after Corey Forbes’s free-kick had been blocked; then Tom Holmes scored a candidate for goal of the season, picking up a loose clearance from the goalkeeper and, seeing him still off his line, lobbing the ball into the net from over 40 yards out.

The first half featured some excellent football from both sides, who were both passing the ball crisply and accurately and looking to attack at every opportunity. Both sides had chances, but it was Town who pulled a goal back in the 37th minute when City failed to clear a corner.

The second period began with one of these 60-second periods which can decide games. Town attacked and should probably have equalised, but Alex Williams made an excellent save. The ball broke upfield and Denton flicked the ball on intelligently for Forbes, who outpaced the defender from halfway, rounded the keeper and slotted home coolly.

Town refused to give up and pulled a goal back once again in the 55th minute when a right-wing cross was turned in from close range.

The second half was more frantic than the first, if no less exciting, with only the ever-impressive Luke Carnell looking like he had any time on the ball. City might have had a penalty when Forbes appeared to have been brought down in the area after another excellent run, but the referee waved play on. Town proceeded to throw everything at City in the search for an equaliser, but Simon Reeves and Mitchell Meredith held firm in defence and Alex Williams made two tremendous saves.

City held out for the win to the obvious delight of the players. This was a real team effort in a game played in a marvellous spirit by both teams.

Team: Alex Williams (capt) – Kieran Collins (sub James Harris 65 min), Simon Reeves, Mitchell Meredith, Craig Duncan – Tom Holmes, Laurence El Kassir, Luke Connell, Richard Norris - Rhys Denton, Corey Forbes. The whole team put in a tremendous effort, with Mitchell Meredith and Simon Reeves commanding at the back, Alex Williams dealing confidently with everything that came his way, the full-backs and wide midfielders providing real width, Lawrence El Kassir solid in front of the back four, the front two challenging for everything and Luke Carnell showing real class in the middle of the park.

The equaliser came when Tom Holmes’s perfectly-weighted free-kick was met by an unstoppable header from Richard Norris which saw the ball bullet into the corner.

City added two further goals before half-time, both created by the excellent Carnell. First a through ball split the defence and Rhys Denton smashed the ball into the top corner from 18 yards; then Norris was set free down the right. His cross was cut out by a last-ditch challenge which prevented Denton scoring, but the ball merely rebounded to the advancing Norris, who netted from the corner of the six-yard box. Kyle Harris and El Kassir could also have scored for a City side who were well on top.

Farnborough attempted to get back into the game after the break, but it was City who went further ahead, with Denton making a great run on the left and firing in a cross which the keeper could only palm out to Holmes, who netted coolly.

Farnborough never looked likely to retrieve the situation, often wasting promising situations by shooting needlessly from distance. City’s best remaining chance fell to substitute Aaron Davies, who shot wide after a great run, unfortunately sustaining an injury in the process which meant he had to be replaced himself.

This was a great all-round team performance, particularly in the first half.

Team: Alex Williams (capt) – Zac Lafford, Simon Reeves (sub Aaron Davies 53 min) (sub James Harris 83 min), Mitchell Meredith, Joe Bull – Kyle Harris, Laurence El Kassir, Luke Connell, Tom Holmes – Richard Norris, Rhys Denton. City, despite fielding the same team who had put in such a commanding performance against Farnborough, seemed to be unable to string more than two passes together. Too often players seemed to expect the ball to come to them rather than moving into space to receive it, which meant that team-mates were reduced to hitting speculative 60-yard passes inatesad of playing the simple ball.

Vale took advantage of defensive indecision in the 12th minute to go ahead when Khan nipped in between keeper and defender to score.

The visitors continued to look dangerous up front, but City started to exert more control over the game, with Corey Forbes prominent in attack. It was Forbes whose pace and control led to the equaliser – he was brought down on the edge of the area, and Andrew Smith’s free-kick was headed back across goal by Laurence El Kassir for Luke Connell to force the ball home from close range.

City, who were much more fluent after the break, were well on top in the second half, and scored two more goals. First Forbes beat the offside trap to run from wide and lash the ball home; then Rhys Denton killed the game off when he was on hand to finish from close range after good work by Forbes and Tom Holmes had put the Vale goal under pressure.

Vale continued to try to save the game and were unlucky to hit the bar from outside the area, but City continued to dominate and only a couple of good saves and a goal-line clearance prevented Forbes, Connell and El Kassir from adding to the lead.

Team: Alex Williams – Kyle Harris, Simon Reeves, Mitchell Meredith (sub Richard Higgs 85 min), Joe Bull (sub James Harris 78 min) – Tom Holmes, Luke Connell, Laurence El Kassir, Andrew Smith (sub Richard Norris 59 min) – Corey Forbes, Rhys Denton. City were not to be denied, however, and took the lead in the 14th minute. The inventive Luke Connell hit a pinpoint 40-yard pass to Andrew Smith, who beat the right-back and fired in an excellent low cross for Corey Forbes to hammer home.

City were passing the ball about superbly, and Denton. Laurence El Kassir, Tom Holmes and Forbes came close to adding to the lead, before the game was finished off as a contest with three goals inside five minutes. First Forbes chased down a seemingly lost cause in the corner, cut in past two defenders, drew the goalkeeper and slotted home; then Smith hit an unstoppable shot from fully 30 yards into the top corner; finally the irrepressible Forbes completed his hat-trick with a fierce 20-yard shot.

Farnborough’s highly-rated forward on work experience from Reading, Jamel Forde-Small, who has already featured several times for the Farnborough first team, was kept unusually quiet by the impressive central defensive partnership of Simon Reeves and Mitchell Meredith, but took his one chance in the 39th minute with a well-placed free kick.

Any hope that Farnborough had of a revival was killed off by Meredith’s well-placed header from a corner which restored the four-goal cushion.

Smith and Reeves missed chances to make an excellent first half even better, and only a desperate Farnborough clearance prevented an own goal; overall this was one of the best 45 minutes seen at Court Place Farm in years and 5-1 certainly did not flatter City.

As is often the case when the game is effectively over by the interval, the second period provided fewer thrills. Forbes and Smith, both superb throughout, both came close to scoring on more than one occasion, and Denton was twice denied by excellent saves. Farnborough only created one chance, but with the otherwise immaculate Alex Williams beaten, Meredith cleared off the line.

Aside from those previously mentioned, full-backs Kyle Harris and Joe Bull deserve credit for being faultless in defence and using the ball excellently; every City player should be congratulated for a magnificent all-round display.

Team: Alex Williams – Kyle Harris, Simon Reeves, Mitchell Meredith, Joe Bull – Tom Holmes (sub Richard Higgs 89 min), Laurence El Kassir, Luke Connell, Andrew Smith (sub James Harris 82 min) – Corey Forbes, Rhys Denton. Hayes took the lead in the 12th minute with an extremely fortunate goal. A Hayes player was performed an obvious dive in the penalty area, but with the referee signaling that it was a dive and most of the players waiting to see what action he would take, a speculative shot took a huge deflection and crept inside the post.

City became more composed as the game progressed. With Lawrence El Kassir and Luke Connell controlling the midfield, Reeves and Mitchell Meredith commanding at the back, Kyle Harris overlapping to great effect from right-back and Corey Forbes his usual inventive self upfront, they dominated the middle period of the game and were unlucky not to go in at half-time on level terms.

City gained their reward in the 50th minute when Forbes, put through by Reeves, showed a trademark piece of skill to lob the keeper from 35 yards.

City were the better team but could not find another goal, and were caught out with 20 minutes to go when a clearing header from a free-kick struck a Hayes forward and was driven home.

City rallied and pressed for the equaliser but luck was not on their side.

This was an excellent performance by the whole City side and more of the same will see them climb the table in the New Year.

Team: Alex Williams (capt) – Kyle Harris, Simon Reeves, Mitchell Meredith, Joe Bull – Tom Holmes, Luke Connell, Lawrence El Kassir, Jon Gotch – Corey Forbes (sub Richard Higgs 71 min), Dominic Bruno

Allied Counties League Premier Division Wednesday 12th December 2007
Oxford City (0)0
Kidlington (1)1

A young City side missing several regulars lost to a battling Kidlington team at Court Place Farm.

City tried to attack from the off, but Kidlington defended in numbers and City spurned more than one attempt to provide a telling cross.

Kidlington seized the initiative and scored the game’s only goal in the 24th minute when Spiers forced the ball home on the goal-line despite pleas for offside. City really should have cleared the ball moments earlier put paid for indecision at the back.

City’s best chance of the night came seconds after the goal when Corey Forbes saw his shot cannon back off the post.

City seemed to be unable to string two passes together on a bitterly cold night when both sides’ play lacked cohesion and they looked a dispirited side at the break. The second half saw City with renewed spirit and Dominic Bruno put in several good crosses.

The game became increasingly broken up with more than half of the Kidlington side going down with cramp at one point or another and City were unable to find any rhythm. Overall Kidlington were the more determined side and deserved to win a poor game.

Team: Alex Williams (capt) – Padraic Folan (sub James Harris 56 min), Kallum Conlon (sub Lawrence El Kassir 78 min), Rhys Denton, Joe Bull – Jon Gotch (sub Kyle Harris 61 min), Tom Holmes, Jon Rixon, Andrew Smith – Dominic Bruno, Corey Forbes.

Bisley Sports

Bisley Sports v City Youth 14th Nov Match Report
Posted by Hugh on November 16, 2007, 3:03 pm
Allied Counties League Premier Division Wednesday 14th November 2007

Bisley Sports (0)4
Oxford City (2)4 (og 24, Holmes 35, Bruno 87, Gotch 89)

City battled their way to a creditable draw away to Bisley.

City were decimated by injuries and unavailability but started brightly, passing the ball well in extremely cold conditions at Farnborough. Corey Forbes, who was full of running and invention, was causing the Bisley backline problems and it was from one of his crosses that a Bisley defender headed into his own net.

City continued to attack and a Rhys Denton free kick was met by an elegant flick of the head by Tom Holmes to put City further ahead.

Bisley made three changes at half-time and took the game to a tiring City side. Alex Williams made a couple of good saves but was powerless as the defence parted to let Sedu run through and score after 58 minutes. Seven minutes later Bisley were on level terms. Williams turned Wilcock’s header on to the post but Wilcock reacted first to score.

Earlier this season at Court Place Farm City had lost to Bisley after going two up, and it seemed that history was repeating itself when the speedy Sedu, the division’s top scorer, completed his hat-trick with a penalty on 71 minutes after Williams was adjudged to have fouled him, and another good run and finish on 83 minutes.

City, however, showed great team spirit and came right back at Bisley. Dominic Bruno, who ran himself to a standstill up front, lobbed the goalkeeper delicately to give City fresh hope. A flurry of corners followed and it was from one of these that Jon Gotch deftly flicked home a deserved equaliser.

City continued to press and Bisley’s number 3, who had made amends for his earlier own goal with two excellent goal-line clearances in the first half, saved Bisley again when he headed off the line with the keeper beaten.

All of the City players deserve the highest praise for their spirit and teamwork under difficult circumstances. Dean Holmes likewise deserves great credit for moving up to the manager’s chair in place of the unavailable Duncan Colwell.

City face Reading Town at home on Wednesday 21 November.

Team: Alex Williams – Padraic Folan, Kallum Conlon, Rhys Denton, Richard Higgs (sub Aaron Davies 57 min) – Kyle Harris, Lawrence El Kassir, Tom Holmes, Jon Gotch – Corey Forbes, Dominic Bruno.

Aldershot

FA Youth Cup - Oxford City Youth 0 Aldershot Town Youth 4 - report from Hugh
<!-- google_ad_client = "pub-9639136181134974"; google_alternate_color = "FFFFFF"; google_ad_width = 300; google_ad_height = 250; google_ad_format = "300x250_as"; google_ad_type = "text_image"; google_color_border = "FFFFFF"; google_color_bg = "FFFFFF"; google_color_link = "000099" google_color_url = "999999" google_color_text = "330099" randNum = Math.random(); if ( (0.00 <= randNum ) && ( randNum < google_ad_channel = "5063162501" google_hints = "Oxford City Message Board" google_ad_channel = "8919596209" google_hints = "" google_ad_channel = "1299203532" google_hints = "Oxford City Message Board / " google_ad_channel = "5608730059" google_hints = "FA Youth Cup - Oxford City Youth 0 Aldershot Town Youth 4 - report from Hugh" google_ad_channel = "6649277950">

Posted by Claire on November 2, 2007, 8:30 pm
FA Youth Cup sponsored by e.on 3rd Qualifying Round Wednesday 31st October 2007

Oxford City (0)0
Aldershot Town (2)4

City bowed out of this year’s FA Youth Cup against a strong Aldershot side. Aldershot, with their first team riding high in the Conference and an Academy set-up, would be expected to beat City – but the same could have been said last year when City won on penalties at the this stage.

Both sides looked nervous at the start and failed to keep the ball for any length of time. Aldershot’s defence looked panicky at times but Mohammed Habu, a quick, strong and athletic centre-back and the game’s outstanding player, was often on hand to clear the danger.

Mark Bell carved out a great opening down the right but Joe Bull, who along with Richard Norris was a powerhouse in midfield throughout, was unlucky to see his shot sail over, and Andrew Smith provided a couple of dangerous crosses.

Town went ahead midway through the first half when a defensive mix-up let Dan Simmons in to score. Three minutes later the lead was doubled when a debatable free-kick led to a less than clear-cut penalty and Simmons scored once more.

City continued to press, with Bull going close again, Bell putting in some useful crosses and Smith having a shot touched on to the post. The second half started in similar vein, with Bell running from the halfway line only to see his shot saved superbly by Bufton and the rebound just fail to be turned in by Lawrence El Kassir, but the lucky break in front of goal never came.

Simmons completed his hat-trick just after the hour with a fine individual goal. At this point City finally seemed to stop believing they could turn the tie around and Read added a fourth from close range. Alex Williams made a couple of excellent stops to prevent an unfair gloss from being put on the score.

Aldershot were the better team – stronger, quicker and cannier – but there was not a difference of four goals between the teams in this entertaining match.

Team: Alex Williams (capt) - Padraic Folan, Kallum Conlon (sub Rhys Denton 44 min), Simon Reeves, Lewis Colwell – Richard Norris, Lawrence El Kassir, Joe Bull, Andrew Smith (sub Jon Gotch 85 min) – Corey Forbes, Mark Bell (sub Richard Higgs 73 min).

Unused subs: Tom Holmes, Kyle Harris.

County Representations

3 Oxford City Youth team players have been chosen to represent the County U18's tomorrow away to Somerset County FA.
The 3 players are Mark Bell, Corey Forbes & Lewis Colwell.

Well done to these players.

Duncan.

North Greenford Utd

Allied Counties League Premier Division Wednesday 3rd October 2007
North Greenford Utd (2)3
Oxford City (4)5 (Forbes 1, 30, Reeves 9, Bell 33, 90)

It was proved once again on Wednesday why betting on football is so difficult; surely nobody would have predicted that City’s Under 18s would win 5-3 away from home for the second week in a row?

This result looked particularly unlikely when City sped into a two-goal lead. Corey Forbes opened the scoring in the first minute, forcing home a Mark Bell cross from 8 yards after an excellent Laurence El-Kassir through ball had split the defence. Eight minutes later Simon Reeves got the final touch on an Andrew Smith cross which had beaten the keeper, and only a magnificent reaction save prevented a third goal after Bell danced past four defenders in the 12th minute.

Both sides were playing incisive, attacking football on the ground in an excellent first half and City, fielding yet another new central defensive partnership, failed to clear the ball and conceded a goal from a well-struck 18 yard shot in the 20th minute.

Some great skill by Tom Holmes created an opening for Forbes to curl the ball superbly into the top corner on the half hour, then Bell went round the keeper and slotted home from a seemingly impossible angle to make it 4-1.

Greenford pulled another goal back in the 41st minute when City failed to clear a free-kick and the ball was rifled home from the edge of the area to complete a pulsating first half which seemed to fly by, such was the level of excitement offered.

The second half was a scrappier affair. City, having already had to replace Smith through illness in the first half, now lost Forbes to injury, which left them short of recognized front players. A stunning Bell ‘goal’ which might have killed the game off was chalked off for a mysterious offside missed by the assistant referee, and several Bell crosses beat the defenders but found no takers in the middle. Greenford, determined to retrieve the situation, made it 4-3 with just over 20 minutes to go when one of their centre-backs, left unmarked at a corner, headed home.

Greenford, buoyed by this goal, took the game to a tiring City, but City, with Bell outstanding again, looked more likely to score on the break; it was Bell who concluded the scoring when outrageous close control saw him beat three defenders and the keeper before smashing home from another tight angle.

This was another excellent game between two sides whose attacking prowess was not matched by their defending. Apart from Bell, Forbes, El-Kassir and Joe Bull impressed, while it was good to hear Alex Williams organising and commanding his inexperienced defence.
Team: Alex Williams (capt) – Padraic Folan, Simon Reeves, Kallum Conlon (sub Zac Lafford 78), Joe Bull – Mark Bell, Laurence El-Kassir, Tom Holmes, Andrew Smith (sub Richard Norris 34) – Jon Gotch, Corey Forbes (sub Rhys Denton 58).

Fleet Town

FA Youth Cup 1st Qualifying Round Wednesday 26 September 2007
FLEET TOWN YOUTH (2) 3
OXFORD CITY YOUTH (2) 5 (Gotch 16, Forbes 27, Bell 49, pen 54, Norris 72)
Games between Fleet and Oxford City seem guaranteed to produce goals at the moment – 12 in the extraordinary Youth Cup game a year ago, 6 in the errea Cup contest the night before this match, and another 8 here.

Perhaps this was not as good a game as last year’s astonishing 6-6 draw which City won on penalties – there was little in the way of fluent football and the play was scrappy. However, it was a nail-biting contest where the result was always in doubt, and Fleet showed great determination and skill in what must have been a very difficult game for them after the recent tragic death of youth team player Dan Ayre, in memory of whom there was a minute’s applause before the match.

Cup nerves seemed to dominate the opening exchanges and there was little pattern to the play until Fleet took the lead in the 13th minute with a well-taken shot after the City defence had given the ball away. City were back on level terms within 3 minutes when Jon Gotch fired home from 10 yards after being set up by Mark Bell.

Fleet tried to take the initiative but were too often caught offside, and City increased their lead in the 27th minute. Corey Forbes, 25 yards out, volleyed an unstoppable shot into the top corner. Fleet made it 2-2 in the 35th minute with a close-range shot following a corner.

City brought on Ashley Jones at half-time and their midfield started to look more cohesive. Bell, showing no ill-effects from playing three-quarters of the first team fixture the previous night, started to have more influence on the game, and put City in front with a rasping shot after he had beaten his marker.

Five minutes later Bell added a well-struck penalty after he had been pulled back when about to shoot. This meant that he had scored a total of seven goals (four on his 18th birthday last Saturday) in five days for three teams (Nomads, first team and Youth). City should now have been in the driving seat, but Fleet were determined to retrieve the game and their marvellously combative number 4 reduced the deficit with a storming run from halfway and a rocket shot from well outside the area.

City were under pressure and there were some fierce tackles, but some sensible refereeing kept the game flowing. City restored their two-goal cushion when Richard Norris reacted first to drive home the rebound when the Fleet keeper could only parry a fierce Forbes shot.

Even then the result remained in doubt, as Fleet threw everything at City and several last-ditch clearances were necessary to ensure the win.

Perhaps not a game for the purist – sometimes teamwork went out of the window – but it was classic cup-tie football in an absorbing, unpredictable contest. In the end it was Bell’s experience and class that decided the game, but every player on the pitch deserves praise. However, it is City who go through to face Buckingham Town away in the next round.

Team: Alex Williams, Padraic Folan, Simon Reeves (sub Rhys Denton 78 min), Zac Lafford, Lewis Colwell – Dominic Bruno (sub Ashley Jones ht), Mark Bell (sub Richard Higgs 84), Lawrence El - Kassir, Jon Gotch – Richard Norris, Corey Forbes.
Unused subs: Tom Holmes, Kallum Conlon.

Bisley Sports - Home

Allied Counties Youth League Premier Division Wednesday 12th September 2007

Oxford City (2)2 (Jon Gotch 11, Richard Norris 15)
Bisley Sports (2)3
Oxford City suffered a disappointing defeat in their first home game of the season.

The game started brightly with both teams trying to pass the ball. Both sides created chances, but it was City who went two up early on. First an excellent long pass from Lewis Colwell set up Jon Gotch to finish coolly, then Richard Norris capitalized on a goalkeeping error to roll the ball into an unguarded net.

Bisley hit back to equalize with an excellent first time shot and a composed finish.

Up to this point the game had been open and entertaining, but it began to degenerate, with the ball spending more time out of the ground than in play. Too many players on both sides were content to hog the ball and run down blind alleys rather than passing.

Bisley scored the winner early in the second half with a looping header from a right-wing cross. City dominated possession for the rest of the game but could never find the final ball to punish Bisley; often players were guilty of shooting when others were in a better position.

City still look like a team who are getting to know each other and better results will surely follow.
Team: Alex Williams (capt) – Kyle Harris, Kallum Conlon, Rhys Denton, Lewis Colwell – Andrew Smith, Laurence El-Kassir (sub Tom Holmes 72 min), Ashley Jones, Jon Gotch (sub Richard Higgs 85 min) – Corey Forbes, Richard Norris (sub Simon Reeves 62 min)
Unused subs: Aaron Davies

Chesham V OCFC

Allied Counties Youth League Premier Division Monday 3rd September 2007
Chesham United (0)2
Oxford City (1)3 (Corey Forbes 27, 64, Richard Norris 87)

Oxford City picked up three points with a battling performance in their opening league game of the season.

A young City side featuring many newcomers to this level, twice saw their lead pegged back but had the character and determination to keep playing to the end.

The game took a while to settle down and there were few chances before City went ahead just before the half-hour. A long pass by Zac Lafford found Simon Reeves, whose cross looked to have evaded everyone, but Jon Gotch showed great perseverance to retrieve the ball and cross for Corey Forbes to glance home.

City held on to the break, but a defensive error gave Chesham an easy equalizer from four yards ten minutes after half-time.

Nine minutes later City were back in front. Richard Norris might well have been given offside had the Chesham goalkeeper not chosen to play the ball; his attempt to dribble round Norris saw the ball rebound to Forbes, who showed great composure and technique to stroke the ball into the net from 35 yards out.

Chesham battled back again and were on level terms within 3 minutes, when a corner was headed in.

City continued to attack and took the lead for the third time when Richard Norris, having been set up by the magnificent Forbes, slotted home coolly from the corner of the 18-yard box.

Chesham tried to retrieve the situation during the thirteen minutes of injury time but did not test City’s impressive skipper Alex Williams. Indeed, it was City who should have added to their lead, spurning three chances when one-on-one with the keeper. The unpredictable Richard Higgs was particularly unlucky to see his shot beat the keeper and rocket back off the post.

This was a battling performance in all areas of the field from City. Recent events at Farnborough meant that half their Youth team had featured for their first team the night before; City were also without several regulars due to injury, unavailability and first-team calls. In particular, captain Kieron Lewis was called upon to marshal an experimental and inexperienced back three.

The game started slowly on a rock-hard pitch and the fatigue of many of the participants was easy to see. City were struggling to impose themselves on the game and Town were dominant without really threatening.

Town started to look more dangerous and Doran Solomon made two excellent saves before he was beaten by a header at close range from a Hayes corner in the 41st minute, sustaining an injury in the process which led to his replacement by Alex Williams during a protracted period of stoppage time.

The first ten minutes of the second half followed the same pattern, but City switched to 4-4-2 and the whole complexion of the game changed. Lance Williams equalized with a fierce shot which beat the keeper at his near post, and City started to control the midfield. Williams, Ben Hepburn and Jetmir Kamberi were much more prominent than in the first period, and a typically inventive performance from Mark Bell in a 20-minute cameo appearance also caused problems for the Borough defence.

Kamberi, Bell and Jack Griffiths all came close to snatching a winner as an under-pressure Farnborough side had seven players booked, six of them for dissent. In the last minute, man-of-the-match Kieron Lewis, superb throughout yet again, looked to have won the game with a majestic header from the latest in a series of corners, only to see the goal ruled out by the linesman for a mysterious infringement.

A draw was perhaps a fair result but City could easily have snatched this match. As it is, Town’s dropped points mean that Hayes retain their championship. The City team were without several players, including Stephen Davis and Mark Bell; more than half of the team had also played Southern League or Hellenic football for City or Nomads 24 hours previously. It looked even more ominous for City when Wealdstone went a goal up in the third minute when a bad bounce on the dry pitch defeated Doran Solomon.

However, City showed great character and laid siege to the Wealdstone goal for the remainder of the half, with Corey Forbes, Kieron Lewis and Jetmir Kamberi going close before Jack Griffiths scored his now customary goal in the 35th minute, flicking home deftly after good work by Lance Williams and Mark Janes.

City continued to press and could well have had a penalty when Corey Forbes appeared to be fouled inside the area.

The second half continued in similar vein and City went ahead when Ben Hepburn, who showed great skill throughout, drilled home a weak clearance from 14 yards.

City were playing some lovely one-touch football and gained their reward when Jetmir Kamberi scored a textbook header from a Ben Hepburn corner.

Wealdstone pulled a goal back late on from a debatable penalty, but in truth there was more than one goal separating these teams. Praise must go in particular to Kieron Lewis and Joel Meade who have been outstanding at the back all season, to Jamie Coleman, who never shirked a challenge, and to Jack Griffiths and Corey Forbes up front, whose tireless running and hard work never gave Wealdstone a moment’s peace.

The recovery from an early setback, by a side who could have been forgiven for pleading fatigue and simply going through the motions, is testament to the character of the whole team and their management.

Team: Doran Solomon – Mark Janes, Joel Meade, Kieron Lewis (capt), Lewis Colwell – Lance Williams, Jamie Coleman, Jetmir Kamberi, Ben Hepburn – Jack Griffiths, Corey Forbes.
Subs (unused): Lawrence El-Kassir, Ajay Lloyd, Alex Williams, Russell Colwell.

North Greenford-Away

  Allied Counties Youth League
Premier Division
Wednesday 11th April 2007

North Greenford United (0) 1
Oxford City (0) 3 (Griffiths 55, Bell 58, 90)

City kept their winning run going when they came from a goal behind to beat North Greenford.
The first half was goalless and largely uneventful on a difficult surface. The pitch, while well-kept and tidy like the rest of the ground, was extremely dry like most other pitches at present, and both teams were occasionally defeated by the bounce. Both teams were passing the ball well but failed to give either keeper any real problems.
City, fielding a makeshift defence in the absence of the commanding Joel Meade, were caught out just after the break when a long free-kick found North Greenford’s lively centre forward in space and he slotted the ball past Alex Williams to put the home side one up.
This seemed to act as a wake-up call to City, who completely dominated the next half hour. Griffiths and Bell saw shots saved before a Lance Williams through ball found Jack Griffiths, who calmly lobbed the advancing keeper.
Three minutes later Mark Bell put City in the lead when he fired home from close range after an excellent Griffiths run and cross. Bell, Griffiths and Corey Forbes then all went close with Griffiths particularly unlucky when his snap shot rebounded off the post straight into the keeper’s arms.
An accidental collision between the home keeper and City’s Jetmir Kamberi saw the goalkeeper leave the field missing his two front teeth. The North Greenford manager was eventually sent from the bench amid considerable confusion.
Deep into injury time Mark Bell completed the scoring with a shot from twelve yards after he cleverly made space for himself in typical fashion.
City only displayed their best form in patches but still did enough to deservedly win the game. North Greenford were a quick and skilful side who certainly contributed to a generally entertaining game.

City Team: Alex Williams, Mark Janes, Simon Reeves, Kieron Lewis (Capt), Lewis Colwell (sub Jamie Coleman 88), Lance Williams, Jetmir Kamberi, Mark Bell, Ben Hepburn, Corey Forbes (sub Lawrence El-Kassir 90), Jack Griffiths.

Chalfont-Away

  ALLIED COUNTIES YOUTH LEAGUE
PREMIER DIVISION
Wednesday 4 April 2007
Chalfont St Peter (0)0
Oxford City (1)5 (Griffiths 33, Bell 49, 83,90, Janes 81)

City recorded their second win of the week with a convincing victory at Chalfont St Peter.

City again started the game slowly and could have been behind in the first half-hour as Chalfont created several chances, striking the bar on one occasion. However, as City began to adjust to a surface which had become hard and bumpy owing to recent weather, they began to dominate the match.

Jack Griffiths once again opened the scoring with a strong run from halfway and a well-placed finish past the advancing keeper.

City created several chances in the remainder of the half, but had until wait to just after the break to increase their lead thanks to a well-placed Mark Bell header from a Stephen Davis free-kick.

City started to produce some fluent attacking moves, and Jetmir Kamberi and Mark Janes, both rested at the start owing to the recent heavy programme of matches, provided further impetus. Indeed, Janes’s first touch produced the third goal as he showed great technique to collect and fire home a Kamberi pass.

Janes, Davis, Griffiths and first-half substitute Corey Forbes made up a potent, all-action attacking quartet who never gave the Chalfont defence a second’s peace as the game wore on, while Joel Meade and Kieron Lewis were their usual commanding selves on the rare occasions they were called into action.

City could have scored several more goals – Davis was particularly unlucky to hit a post with the keeper stranded – but it was Bell, once again impressive, who completed his hat-trick with two excellent left foot strikes.

This was another praiseworthy performance from a side who in some cases were playing their third game this week. Recent results have meant that City’s outside title chance has disappeared, but this was an important victory which helped them consolidate in the top half of the table.

Thatcham were on top in the first twenty minutes, with Mark Janes clearing a header off the line. City began to come back to into the game but struggled to find the killer final ball. In the 32nd minute, an almighty scramble saw Mark Bell head against the bar, Ben Hepburn have a shot well saved and Lance Williams fire just over within a matter of seconds.

City took the lead in the 40th minute. Great work by Simon Reeves, Lewis Colwell and Ben Hepburn created a chance which Thatcham failed to clear and Lance Williams was on hand to tap home from 3 yards.

Two minutes later City had increased their lead. Jetmir Kamberi could stage his own ‘goal of the season’ competition, but this was outstanding even by his standards, as he picked the ball up in midfield, ghosted past three players, drew the goalkeeper and slotted the ball inside the far post.

Thatcham pulled a goal back in the 49th minute from a well-struck 20-yard free kick. This heralded a period of Thatcham pressure as City struggled to regain their shape. However, the introduction of the rested Stephen Davis in the last ten minutes provided fresh impetus, and Jack Griffiths, who contributed his usual 100% effort as substitute, first beat the offside trap, then was on hand to bundle home a Mark Bell cut-back.

City failed to produce their best form consistently in a game which was rarely allowed to flow, but were well worth their victory over the 90 minutes. The next league game in their crowded end-of-season programme is at home to Harefield next Monday (2nd April).
Team: Doran Solomon – Mark Janes, Kieron Lewis (capt), Joel Meade, Jamie Coleman – Simon Reeves (sub Jack Griffiths 57 min), Mark Bell, Jetmir Kamberi, Lewis Colwell (sub Steven Davis 80 min) – Ben Hepburn (sub Corey Forbes 88 min), Lance Williams.

Chesham-Away

The Youth Team earned a valuable point away to Chesham last night.
With some of the squad being asked to play their 3rd game in 3 day's it was a case of seeing who could stand let alone run & play football.

Chesham took the lead & we looked tired & jaded. This game proved equally close.

A strong and quick Hayes side, eager to avenge their own first reverse in their last game at closest rivals Farnborough, had the better of the first half against a City side in action for the first time in seven weeks. However, Hayes seldom called City keeper Doran Solomon into action; indeed, City came closest to a goal when Jack Griffiths hit the post in the 8th minute after excellent work by Jetmir Kamberi.

If Hayes dominated the first period, the second certainly belonged to City, although they too failed to turn their territorial superiority into many clear-cut chances. Their best opportunity came in injury time when Kamberi and Ben Hepburn combined superbly to set up Griffiths, whose shot eluded the keeper but drifted past the post.

The only sour note for City came towards the end of the game when Michael Betnay was stretchered off with a knee injury.

City more than matched Hayes over the piece, with Mark Bell, Lance Williams, Mark Janes, Kamberi and Hepburn always looking to create and Griffiths full of running up front. Playing into a strong wind in the first period, City were a goal up at half-time and held off Town in the second 45 minutes.

Thatcham were the only Allied Counties side other than City to reach the FA Youth Cup 1st Round proper; Town, in fact, went one better in reaching Round 2 before losing at Merthyr Tydfil. Town, like City, are a FA Charter Standard Community Club and have a well-run Youth set-up.

City went one up early on as the enigmatic Jetmir Kamberi produced one of his trademark sublime pieces of skill with a glorious curling shot from the edge of the area which left the keeper stranded. Thatcham equalized almost immediately through Maltby, although many believed there was a strong suspicion of handball in the build-up.

The gusting winds made good football difficult, and City’s carefully constructed moves often seemed to break down around the 18-yard line. However, with the returning Lance Williams providing width down the right-hand side, City became more dominant as the half progressed and scored two further goals. Both came after the Thatcham defence had failed to deal with searching Stephen Davis crosses; Jack Griffiths and Mark Bell provided two clinical finishes.

That should have killed the game off, but Thatcham were given a lifeline just before the break by a goal in a million by Piper, who beat his marker, flicked the ball back over the defender and volleyed home.

The second half saw both teams struggle against an even stronger wind. Town tried to take the game to City, but the defence, with Joel Meade outstanding, held firm.

With time running out, City had a great chance to make the game safe when Ben Hepburn combined with Griffiths to set up Davis, but his shot went over from close range. Davis, who was again outstanding, compensated for this miss in injury time by threading an inch-perfect pass through the defence for Griffiths to slot the ball past the advancing keeper. This was just reward for Griffiths’ irrepressible front-running performance.

This was another display of skill and teamwork by the Under 18s, and another excellent three points.
Team: Russell Colwell – Michael Betnay, Joel Meade, Kieron Lewis, Lewis Colwell – Lance Williams, Jetmir Kamberi, Mark Bell, Stephen Davis – Jack Griffiths, Ben Hepburn (capt).
Subs (used): Jason Evans, Lawrence El-Kassir, Simon Reeves; (unused) Jason Evans, Alex Williams.

Reporter: Hugh Simpson

Thatcham - Away

Thatcham Town 2 - OCFC 4

A good win on a very windy night.
The conditions didn't allow for free flowing football but credit to both sides for trying to play & keep the passing going.

We played some excellent football in the 1st half & having Lance Williams out on the right side gave us another attacking option. I look to see the reaction of young players after losing and to say they were gutted can be looked upon as a understatement. This shows how much this team has blended & where not many gave us much of a chance in the Premier Division this season we have shown that we can compete with the best teams in this division.

I have said to the players if you finish above Hayes this season you would probably win the league. I still think this is the case.

I can't & will not question my players commitment, they tried to follow the game plan & at times we out played the league leaders. We lost the game on decision making & not shutting down quick enough in wide areas to stop crosses or letting players get a run on the full backs.

Giving the opposition, the amount of possesion & goal attempts we had says how hard we worked, & we also made their goal keeper pull of the save of the night with a finger tip push over.

We have 1 or 2 excellent players who I believe should at least be training at 1st team level, if we don't start this procedure we will once again lose these players to other teams where they will get there chance. If we take the time to develop these players & they work hard we should be looking to reward them with a chance.

It would be good to see some interest from the 1st team management or director of football in this youth team.

Hugh will fill in the scorers etc. with one of his excellent reports.

Many thanks to everyone who gave their support & the tea stall ladies for their help & excellent refreshments.

Duncan Colwell Youth Team Manager.

Northwood Match Reaction

  Great report Hugh.
Hugh get's it spot on when he mention's about the 'excellent Stephen Davis'. Steve has set himself such high standards with his display's & very rarely put's in a bad performance.

I thought last night was a much better performance. We had to switch the side around a bit has centre back Kieron Lewis, who has been outstanding so far this season, was ill. His would be replacement was also unavailable so Lawrence El-Kassir was asked to play at the back for the 1st time. Ben Hepburn was only 75% fit but started & there were also 2 others who played that were only just getting over colds & illness.

I thought Lawrence played very well for his 1st game in defence, Mark Bell started to show some form & got his passing game going again, Jack Griffiths ran his socks off up front, but for me Joel Meade was a giant for us at the back. He never missed a header & was like a brick wall to get around.

All in all it was a good win against a competetive side. Exits from two competitions in the last fortnight meant that their confidence had taken a knock, but they showed great resilience to get back to winning ways without ever really firing on all cylinders.

City both began and ended the game well, and the match was bookended by two superb pieces of skill from the excellent Steven Davis. In the 7th minute he lobbed the keeper from an acute angle near the byline, and in the 79th minute he provided the game’s highlight when he made room for him self superbly inside the box through outstanding close control and curled an exquisite shot past Northwoood’s excellent keeper to make the game safe.

In between, City struggled at times, and for much of the first half were second best, with Northwood getting a deserved equaliser in the 36th minute. City were perhaps lucky to go ahead just before the break when Ben Hepburn scored from close range after Jack Griffiths had been denied by a great reflex save.

City were more assured in the second half, with Davis and Jetmir Kamberi always involved in wide positions, Jack Griffiths full of running up front and Mark Bell hitting some slide-rule passes. Northwood spurned a couple of decent chances late on to pull a goal back but Alex Williams was able to deal with any threat and City, growing in confidence as the game went on, never looked in danger of dropping points.
Team: Alex Williams – Michael Betnay, Joel Meade, Laurence El-Kassir, Lewis Colwell – Jetmir Kamberi (sub Doran Soloman 89 mins), Mark Bell, Jamie Coleman (sub Kassim Abdillahi 82 mins), Steven Davis – Ben Hepburn (capt) (sub Ajay Lloyd 75 mins), Jack Griffiths.

Hillingdon-Away

Hillingdon Borough 3 - OCFC 1

On a wet & windy night the Youth team bowed out of the League Cup with their poorest performance of the season so far.
Playing against a team from a division below we didn't show any appetite for the game. I don't like to make excuses but our lack of regular football was apparent in showing a great lack of match fitness.

Playing on what was a poor pitch didn't allow us to play any type of passing game & our wide players who are normally 'free flowing' runners could not get the ball in front of them to allow them to run at defenders. This was a game where the fittest & more commited were going to come out on top.

Although we took the lead from a well taken goal from Jetmir Kamberi we still looked second best in midfield & with the distribution from defence very poor Hillingdon were able to have more time on the ball & therefore make more use of it.

After the break we seemed to push on much stronger but with Hillingdon's 1st attack we allowed a high cross to come in which we didn't deal with & a simple tap in resulted in the equaliser. Our heads dropped & we lost shape which is unusal for us. Hillingdon's 2nd came from another poor clearance which went straight to a Hillingdon player & with our goalie out of position he had the skill to chip the ball into an empty net from 30 yards. Again another poor clearance straight to them resulted in a through ball for their forward to beat our goalie in a 1 on 1 situation.

All in all I take nothing away from Hillingdon, they 'wanted' to win this match more than us & I always say if you can't match commitment, strength & the desire to win in your opponent's you will always struggle.

Again we have to wait 2 weeks for our next match, but I know we can bounce back. We have a very strong team spirit which will come through & enough quality to put this behind us.

One last thought though, whenever we wear the yellow kit we always seem to struggle, I think wearing the blue & white hoops seems to increase the players ability by at least 20%. Physcology maybe!

Duncan Colwell Youth Team Manager

Yeovil-Away

FA YOUTH CUP sponsored by e.on FIRST ROUND PROPER
Wednesday 15 November 2006
Yeovil Town (3)6 (Bowles 2, Horder 12, 89, Clarke 41, 68, Morgan 86)
Oxford City (0)1 (Bell 57)

Oxford’s last remaining representatives bowed out of the FA Youth Cup on Wednesday night with a disappointing 6-1 reverse at Yeovil Town. On an occasion spoiled by the weather, the scoreline failed to reflect accurately the skill and commitment City had shown throughout their cup run.

Five levels of the pyramid separate Town’s League One first team from BSB South and West Division side City, and while the Under 18 sides are not so far apart in class, it will always be the case that the smaller side will need to be on top of their game and benefit from a healthy share of luck to cause an upset. This was certainly not the way it turned out as City, playing into a howling wind and driving rain in the first period, found themselves two down within 12 minutes. Having played only one game in over a month, City were understandably slow to start and two headers from set-pieces benefited from uncertain marking and the ball holding up in the wind.

City could have crumbled, but this side have already shown great spirit this season and played themselves back into the game, with Steven Davis always looking to create chances. Their best chance of the first period came after 20 minutes; first Mark Bell forced a fingertip save from Burridge with an excellent curling shot from 25 yards, then Joel Meade headed just wide from the resultant corner.

2-0 at half-time would not have been a bad score given the conditions, but Town scored a third just before the break with a lovely 25 yard lob from Clark after the ball had again been held up in the wind. This might have put the game beyond City even without the wind and rain slackening off at the interval, as the pessimistic among the City followers predicted they would.

Once again, however, City refused to give up and deservedly pulled a goal back when Mark Bell, excellent throughout, showed great persistence to fire home. Yeovil, protesting that a hand had been used, looked rattled briefly and four Town bookings for dissent or encroachment at free-kicks followed in a matter of minutes.

However, City were caught by a sucker punch when Clark forced home from close range to the obvious delight of the Town crowd. Thereafter Town’s greater professionalism and match fitness told and they scored twice more in the closing minutes as City, heads never dropping, continued to push forward.

Yeovil were the better side, and certainly made better use of the conditions, but were undoubtedly not five goals better than a City side who never really showed their full potential. In the aftermath of the game, City’s players and management were understandably dejected, but they achieved great things even getting this far – the first team in a decade to get to the First Round Proper. Moreover, they have acquitted themselves excellently both on and off the field during their cup run and last night showed they are young men who can lose with good grace as well as win games. There should be plenty more victories this season for a group with great talent and great team spirit. They will not lie down & be walked over.

Aldershot were always going to knock the ball around & with the movement of their forwards would pose us some problems. This was how the game started but our boys were under orders to shut down & put pressure on their midfield & back four. This we did with a good deal of success & Ben Hepburn latched onto a high through ball & lobbed the on coming keeper to make it 1-0. This lead was kept through to half time.

The 2nd half saw Aldershot trying to probe a way through our back four & they finally equalised from a long throw in which evaded our defenders to the far post for a low header into our goal.

There were further chances at both ends with Ben Hepburn having a great chance to seal the game for us but with only the goalie to beat he failed to beat the goalie who made a good save.

This saw normal time end 1-1.

Extra time saw us take the lead after a great run from Steve Davis who finished with a superbly taken goal into the bottom corner. This is Steve at his best & although he was spending a lot of the match in a defensive position he is such a threat when he goes down the wing.

Aldershot lost there way a little after this but were always prepared to put the ball onto our back line who were in control for most of this period. With the clock running down Ben Hepburn had his 2nd one on one of the night but again their goalie came out on top. All credit to Ben in my opinion he was always willing to chase what seemed lost causes & was a real handfull all night. With over 5 minutes of added time played Aldershot got the equaliser with the last kick of the game. Most teams at this point would be dead on their knees but all my players wanted to do was go on & win the penalty shootout.

It is a lottery & you do feel a little sorry for the losers. But these boys love taking pens & with a goalie in Alex Williams who likes to try to save them you know your in with a great chance. It seemed to go on forever but in the end we just sneeked it with Mark Bell keeping his nerve to seal it for us.

We were never behind in this game & that just goes to show how much these boys have come on this season. Everybody at Oxford City should be very proud of what they have acheived in the FA Youth Cup this season & we will go to Yeovil to enjoy the occasion & you never know with these boys what will happen.

Many thanks to all who helped with transport & came to support us it is greatly appreciated.

Duncan Colwell Youth Team Manager.

Moneyfields 2 - OCFC 3

FA Youth Cup 2nd Qualifying Round
Thursday 12th October 2006
MONEYFIELDS YOUTH (0) 2
OXFORD CITY (2) 3 (Kamberi 3, Hepburn 14, Griffiths 88)

City won through to the next round of the FA Youth Cup, but made heavy weather of it at times against a committed Moneyfields side.

City’s coach had an eventful end to its journey to the ground, but the team showed no signs of being adversely affected as they raced into a two-goal lead. First Jetmir Kamberi capitalised on a mishit clearance from the opposition keeper, then Ben Hepburn showed great composure to drill home off a post when his free-kick rebounded back to him off the wall.

City then seemed to sit back, thinking the game was won. Moneyfields, flying into challenges as if their lives depended on it, contested every ball and every decision fiercely, and dominated the midfield. Their excellent winger found space time and again, but they never found the final ball to trouble City, who should have wrapped the game up on the stroke of half-time when Kamberi shot wide after good work on the right by Simon Reeves.

The second half was more even until a Moneyfields substitute was sent off for continued dissent after only 8 minutes on the field. A player up, City should have closed the game out, but Moneyfields put in even greater effort, and got a goal back in the 83rd minute from an excellent free-kick after Kieron Lewis was harshly adjudged to have fouled. Four minutes later, they were on level terms as a cross was stabbed home.

Within 45 seconds, however, City showed their great resolve by snatching the winner, as substitute Jack Griffiths bundled the ball in from six yards after an excellent Hepburn run and cross.

Credit to Moneyfields for stopping City from playing as well as they can; in particular, Stephen Davis had so much to do in a defensive role that his trademark runs and crosses were badly missed. Hepburn and Kamberi kept the Moneyfields defence busy with constant running, although they had to feed on scraps for much of the game. The whole team showed great character and – most importantly – are still in the cup.

Team: Alex Williams – Michael Betnay, Joel Meade, Kieron Lewis, Lewis Colwell (sub Brandon Shepherd 70 min) – Simon Reeves (sub Jack Griffiths 75), Jamie Coleman, Mark Bell, Stephen Davis – Ben Hepburn, Jetmir Kamberi (sub Ajay Lloyd 89).

Unused subs: Jason Evans, Russell Colwell.

Next round: away to Aldershot Town, week commencing 23rd October

Reporter: Hugh Simpson

OCFC v Fleet Town

FA YOUTH CUP 1ST QUALIFYING ROUND 27th September 2006
OXFORD CITY (2)3 aet 6 (Lewis 15, 90, Lloyd 36, Davis 92, Kamberi 111, Bell 118)
FLEET TOWN (0)3 aet 6
City won 4-2 on penalties
City finally prevailed in a rain-soaked penalty shoot-out after what may well have been the most extraordinary game ever seen at Court Place Farm. Alex Williams, who had already saved a penalty in normal time, blocked Fleet’s opening effort. Michael Betnay, Lewis Colwell and Joel Meade all showed expert technique to place theirs into the bottom corners for City, and with Fleet’s third going wide, Stephen Davis smashed his shot down the middle to finally separate the sides after more than two hours of enthralling football.

I am not sure I have ever seen a game finish 6-6 before; I know for a fact I have never seen six goals in extra time. There was little hint of the drama to come as City went in at half-time 2-0 up. Kieron Lewis, captain for the day in the absence of Ben Hepburn, fired City ahead from a corner after 15 minutes following a period of sustained City pressure. Fleet tried to get back into the game, forcing one excellent save from Williams and a goal-line clearance from Lewis, before Lloyd shot City further ahead in the 36th minute from a typically excellent Stephen Davis cross. Had Hepburn been leading the line, perhaps City might have made more of the chances they had created and been out of sight at the break

As it was, City were in command and simply needed to keep possession as much as possible in the second period. This they signally failed to do, launching high balls which the Fleet defence eagerly gobbled up. As the half progressed, Fleet began to dominate more and more, but looked to have lost their chance when Williams saved a 61st minute penalty. However, with time running out, a second Fleet penalty was converted in the 80th minute; four minutes later, a defensive mix-up let in Fleet for the equaliser. The away side’s tails were up now and they looked the likelier winners. However, City stormed back and Lewis grabbed his second deep in injury time, forcing home a rebound after Laurence El-Kassir had headed against the bar. With less than a minute of added time remaining, City just needed to run down the clock – but a needless free kick led to a scrambled equaliser with the last kick of regulation time.

Extra-time, with torrential rain making defending a treacherous business, was so packed with goals that several spectators lost count of the score and at least one City player thought they had won 6-5 at the end. The facts were (probably) these: Stephen Davis ghosted in at the far post from a clever free-kick to put City 4-3 up in the 92nd minute; Fleet equalised in the 102nd minute and went ahead for the first time in the 108th after another period of confusion at the back. City’s 5th was perhaps the goal of the night, an unstoppable header from the impressive Kamberi at a corner in the 111th minute. Fleet went ahead again in within 60 seconds, but Davis somehow found the energy for another lung-bursting run and cross with two minutes to go. Lewis’s header hit the bar, but Mark Bell was on hand to sweep home the rebound. There could even have been another goal, as the last kick of the match was provided by Lewis Colwell, somehow clearing the ball off the line from a Fleet corner with the keeper beaten.

The shoot-out was almost an anticlimax, and to tell the truth neither side deserved to leave empty-handed. Some may criticise the defending, but conditions undoubtedly played their part. The game was played in an excellent spirit, and the most notable facet of the game was the way that nobody’s head went down at any stage. Several times we were all heard to mutter ‘well, that’s it over now,’ only to be proved spectacularly and ridiculously wrong. Congratulations to all concerned for their part in an outstanding evening’s entertainment.

Team: Alex Williams, Michael Betnay, Lewis Colwell, Jason Evans (sub Laurence El-Kassir 24 min), Kieron Lewis (capt), Joel Meade, Ajay Lloyd, Mark Bell, Jetmir Kamberi, Jack Griffiths (sub Jamie Coleman 71 min), Stephen Davis.

OCFC 2 - Chesham 0

Allied Counties League – Premier Division
Wednesday 20th September

City’s solid start to life in the Premier Division continued with a hard-fought but ultimately well deserved at home to Chesham United. In a goalless first half, both teams saw a great deal of the ball in midfield but created little in the way of clear cut chances.

For City, Hepburn, Kamberi and in particular, Davis showed pace and control up front against a resolute Chesham defence. Hepburn came closet to scoring when he lobbed the keeper, but saw the ball cleared off the line. Not having had a fixture for two weeks, City took their time to get fully into the game, but the second half saw City well on top. Stephen Davis had some excellent runs down the wing and City forced a series of corners, but it was a simple ball over the top which saw the breakthrough in the 69th minute, when Hepburn was brought down as he chased a through ball. Some thought the award harsh, but the assistant referee who initially flagged for the offence, was perfectly in line. Hepburn picked himself up to smash the penalty into the top corner.

Three minutes later, City increased their lead when Ajay Lloyd was on hand to sweep the ball home from close range after another great run and cross from Davis.

Chesham strove to get back into the game, but with Kieron Lewis outstanding at the back, Alex Williams was never tested. As the game went on, players seemed to be falling like flies all over the pitch – testament to the immense effort put into the game by both teams, who played the game with commendable spirit and fairness and no little skill.

City team: Alex Williams, Michael Betnay, Lewis Colwell, Laurence El-Kassir (sub Jamie Coleman 90 mins), Joel Meade, Kieron Lewis, Ajay Lloyd (sub Simon Reeves 87 mins), mark Bell, Jetmir Kamberi (sub Jack Griffiths 84 mins), Ben Hepburn (capt), Stephen Davis. At this point, City seemed to have lost their shape and were being outfought in midfield and stretched down both flanks.
To their credit however, City showed great character and forced themselves back into contention. A good spell of pressure led to the impressive Mark Bell pulling a goal back in the 37th minute with a clever turn and well placed shot. City ended the half by forcing a series of corners which Farnborough managed to keep scrambling clear.
The second period saw City pressing for an equaliser with Stephen Davis always a danger on the left. The visitors still threatened occasionally on the break but were nowhere near as potent an attacking force as they had been in the first half.
Just when it looked as if City would not find the equaliser they deserved, Kieron Lewis forced the ball home from six yards after cleverly making room for himself following yet another period of City pressure – just reward for the team and for Lewis who had been majestic in the second half.
City continued to press forward in search of the winner, but in the end both teams had to be satisfied with after an excellent 90 minutes entertainment from both sides.

City team:
Alex Williams, Michael Betnay, Joel Meade, Kieron Lewis, Lewis Colwell, Jack Griffiths (sub Simon Reeves 82 mins) Mark Bell, Jamie Coleman, Stephen Davis, Ben Hepburn (Capt), Jetmir Kamberi.
Unused subs: Ajay Lloyd, Kassim Abdillahi, Jason Evans, Zac Craig.
